Bookshelf Challenge: Book #7

What did I read?

Miss Wonderful [Carsington Family #1] by Loretta Chase
(Genre: Regency Romance)
(Amazon||Goodreads||Author'sWebsite)

The synopses?
"Alistair Carsington really, really wishes he didn’t love women quite so much. To escape his worst impulses, he sets out for a place far from civilization: Derbyshire--in winter!--where he hopes to kill two birds with one stone: avoid all temptation, and repay the friend who saved his life on the fields of Waterloo. But this noble aim drops him straight into opposition with Miss Mirabel Oldridge, a woman every bit as intelligent, obstinate, and devious as he—and maddeningly irresistible.
Mirabel Oldridge already has her hands full keeping her brilliant and aggravatingly eccentric father out of trouble. The last thing she needs is a stunningly attractive, oversensitive and overbright aristocrat reminding her she has a heart--not to mention a body he claims is so unstylishly clothed that undressing her is practically a civic duty.Could the situation be any worse? And why does something that seems so wrong feel so very wonderful?"
Why was it on the shelf?
After my fifth or so "OMG, Loretta Chase is great" reading experience, I started stockpiling her backlist titles like a squirrel preparing for a long winter.  Even though I knew I'd enjoy them, I kept passing them over for other things.

Why did I finally read it?
I have all of the Carsington Family Series books but have only read 2.5 of them and not in any real order. I've been thinking for a while that it's time I started at the beginning and plowed on through them.  Luckily, my library happened to have a digital copy of this available to borrow when I was in the mood for a regency and browsing for something to read on my kindle.

Thoughts on the book?
It turns out that I really didn't like this one at all.  I found the storytelling dull and hard to get through. The patches of charm and wit I'm used to with a Chase story showed up from time to time but were too few and far between.  The characters' conflicts didn't make sense and seemed overblown and unnecessarily draw out just to keep the book going.  By the 75% mark, I was internally ranting about how I did not give a single damn about canals anymore.  I also didn't like a twist near the end of the novel involving the heroine's father. It just seemed seriously unrealistic to me and yet another contrivance for the plot.

How's the challenge going?
I was flagging for a bit but my numbers are almost where they need to be.
