Bookshelf Challenge: Book #3

What did I read?

Close Enough To Touch by Victoria Dahl
(Genre: Contemporary Romance)
(Amazon||Goodreads)

The synopses?
"For makeup artist Grace Barrett, Hollywood isn't the land of golden opportunity. It's the land of difficult divas, cheating boyfriends and unemployment. So when her great-aunt offers her a free place to stay in Jackson Hole, Grace thinks she'll spend a little time in the sticks to figure out her life, and then move somewhere exciting to live out her dreams. But it turns out that there are a few more thrills in this small town than Grace was expecting….
Cole Rawlins is a rugged Wyoming cowboy born and bred. Yet he can't help but be drawn to the fascinating big-city girl who moves in across from him. He wants to get close enough to Grace to see past her tough facade, but if he does, she might see the real Cole. The one with a Hollywood history gone bad. As they discover a sizzling attraction, it becomes harder for him to keep his demons at bay—and those fires from long ago may burn them both.
They'll need more than scorching-hot passion to make this opposites-attract affair work. But if they can learn to trust one another enough to reveal their secrets, they just might have a chance at forever."

Why was it on the shelf?
I've enjoyed Victoria Dahl's contemporary romances in the past but kind of drifted away as a reader near the end of her "Donovan Brothers" series.  Still, I couldn't resist picking this one up at a library sale.

Why did I finally read it?
Victoria Dahl is really funny on twitter.  Yup, that was indeed my primary motivation.  Also, I have a serious soft spot for prickly heroines and I was feeling particularly in the mood for a contemporary romance that wasn't about about happy shiny people and their sweet/perfect/happy/shiny lurve.

Thoughts on the book?
I really really liked it.  First off, Grace is a super prickly heroine, which is a kind of heroine that Dahl is really skilled at writing.  She does not like being dependent upon on others for anything at all if she can avoid it and she does not let herself care about people because if you don't care then they don't have the ability to hurt you.  Secondly, Cole is not exactly a fluffy bunny of a character either.  He's dealing with some serious medical problems and some old guilt from his youth and he doesn't always handle his problems with grace. Also, the no-strings sex is smoking hot and Grace's curmudgeonly raunchy great aunt steals the whole damn book.

How's the challenge going?
I didn't quite make January's 4-book goal but reading three books and not a single dud among them is helping me stay motivated.  Plus, the next book I've got lined up is teeny tiny and should take less than an hour to read.  I can do that.
