Bookshelf Challenge: An Overview

The following is a Q&A of sorts with details on my "Unread Bookshelves of Doom" challenge and it's "rules".

Note: I tried to write this in third person as if phantom readers were asking me questions and I totally freaked myself out. Couldn't do it. So I asked myself questions and answered them. It's totally less weird that way.

What do I have?
A four-tiered bookshelf full of unread novels. Many of them have been on the shelf for years and some of them have even been drug across multiple state lines.

What would I like to have?
Less clutter.  Less anxiety about books I've been dragging around and not reading. More time to concentrate on the books I'm actively interested in reading and more time to read digitally since that's become my preferred format.

What am I going to do?
Read 50 books from my unread bookshelves over the course of 2014.

What's with the challenge title?
It's basically a simple TBR reading challenge but I love hyperbole so I threw the whole "doom" thing in there for fun.

What do the shelves look like?
Here's a picture:

I can't read the titles on the spines. Do you have a complete list somewhere?
Why yes. The list has it's own page that can be found in the "Pages" box in the sidebar to the right under "Unread Bookshelf Challenge of Doom" or by following this link here. Can you tell that I am really looking forward to crossing things off on that list?  Because I really really am.

What happens when I inevitably give into my baser impulses and buy more paper books?
Well, they get added to the shelves and this challenge.  On the plus side, I have been very selective in the last year or so about new additions so I'm confident they won't overwhelm the current bookshelf inhabitants.  The last time I tried to challenge myself to read the books I already own, I hadn't learned to curb myself yet and the whole thing imploded.  I see better things in store for us this time around the bend!

What happens if I don't want to finish a book?
I'm pretty good at telling when I've reached a breaking point versus when I'm being lazy or just not in the right mood for a certain title.  If I DNF a book, it totally counts as "getting it off the shelf" and will not be seen as a failure by me because torturing myself and wasting my time with something I'm not enjoying is really counter-productive to this whole thing.

Is it cheating if I borrow the ebook from my library instead of reading the physical copy from the shelves?
No! Totally not cheating!  Again, the goal is not to torture myself so if I can read the book in a format that's more convenient for me and more comfortable on my eyes then I'm damn well going to do so.  Also, borrowing from the library doesn't cost me anything so that's a bonus too.

What happens if I read or otherwise clear all the books?
Snort.  Yeah, that's likely.  In all seriousness though, if this challenge is successful, there's always my unread ebooks to tackle! (Seriously, that situation is way worse because those are way easier to hide from view.  Let's not talk about it right now.)
